Pamphlet of general Museum information

Opening times

Situated in calle Conde de Aranda number 16, this museum offers us the chance to study the local area’s history from as far back as the Neolithic period from the end of the year 3000 b.c. (findings located from the cave C-6 de Cabo Cope), until the present time.

Amongst the most interesting pieces, special attention should be paid to the archaeological Roman collection. The majority of these objects come from the archaeological excavations carried out in Águilas during recent years, in which archaeologists have been gathering information regarding the Roman settlement found under the old part of the town.

Given its importance to the current population of Águilas we can highlight, the remains found in the mountain of the castle of San Juan de las Águilas during the 18th century.

In the centre of the sea’s interpretation, also found within this museum, is a small exposition in which one can find an aquarium exhibiting a variety of the area’s species, along with a number of other objects related to the sea, decorative articles, fishing equipment, models of local fishing systems, and a collection of knots.

Museum of Archaeology

Situated in the first floor of la casa de Cultura Francisco Rabal. A permanent exposition of the aguileño artist José Matrán, opened in 2003, exhibiting valuable artistical pieces in which thanks to the author’s family have been made available. Special interest is given to the negative drawings of celluloid and their positive drawings, plus the sketches over a dark background etc. This virtuous creator practiced many different arts; painting, drawing, photography. His work has been awarded with several different honorific recognitions.

Museum of José Matrán

Housing a display that best characterises the current aguileño carnival: day time carnival, fantasy, feathers and sequins; night time carnival, talent and impudence. The carnival’s key characters: Muse, Don Carnal, Dña. Cuaresma and Mussona. The exposition also looks into   the carnival of days gone by, for instance; the town’s crier, the confetti of egg shells. It is without doubt that these characters perfectly symbolise our carnival, now declared a national Tourist Interest.

Carnival Museum

Situated in the basement floor of the travellers building at the Águilas train station. This building was once used by the English company The Great Southern of Spain railway, towards the end of the 19th century as an archive and safety deposit, which today is still preserved and in perfect working conditions, the armour-plated steel door accessed the safety deposit box.

The museum’s main hall is a large room with massive thick brick walls and whose ceiling forms a vault, through which photographs, used instruments and objects of the line Lorca-Baza-Águilas train journey are exhibited. As well as this, scale models of actual trains are also on display.

Railway Museum

Located in the calle Muñoz Calero, number 22 exhibits the history of football in Águilas, from its beginnings from around 1896. Thanks to the initiative of the Scottish business man Juan Gray Watson, this sport was bought to Águilas.

It is worth mentioning the football ground of Águilas El Rubial the oldest football stadium in Spain (1913).

Football Museum

Located underneath a property in the calle Rey Carlos III on the spot remains of Roman baths can be found dating back from the first century a.c. Special interest is given to the caldarium (the area used for hot baths).

The entire floor dedicated to the Roman baths is thanks to the abbot D. Manuel Robles from the collegiate of Lorca who in 1787 excavated them.

In the small exposition that accompanies the preserved archaeological remains, one can view the floor and the restoration of the Roman baths building.
